About the
George Mercer Jr. Memorial School of Theology

Historically, the Mercer School of Theology has been an important theological education resource to train mature adults for various ministries needed for the mission of the church. At the very heart of the school’s life has been its program of education in preparation for the ordained ministry, both priesthood and diaconate. With the sweeping changes that came into the Church with the introduction of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, the Mercer School of Theology augmented its programs to prepare all women and men for the renewed lay ministries required for the spreading of the kingdom of God. Those lay ministries are provided for in Title III of the Canons of the Episcopal Church and specialized ministry to the elderly and educational ministries.

In 1993, the school built its education around a core of courses which provided a foundation in the basics of theology in a challenging way. This program had its own integrity and was also the basis for other programs of study offered by the school. As the years have moved on so has the thrust of educational opportunities in the School. We now adapt the schedule to meet the growing time constraints on all people in ministry. The programs are designed to address the specific needs of the various ministries to be found in the church of today.

Mercer is deeply conscious of an increasing need for continuing education for clergy and laity. Therefore, in the course of an academic year, the school often offers seminars and study programs which will be advertised on the website. Inquirers are urged to place their names on the mailing list for updates on such programs either by writing to the school office, or by e-mailing us at merceroffice@dioceseli.org, you may also telephone the school office at 516-248-4800, ext. 40.

At the Mercer School of Theology it is possible for anyone, under proper guidance, to pursue studies on a non-credit basis as well as for credit. Whether for credit or not, individuals interested in investigating any area of theology are encouraged to inquire about enrollment.

The vision of formal theological studies and ministry training within a community has taken root at Mercer. As the needs for such learning and training increase and take particular forms. Mercer will respond by shaping educational programs designed to provide the necessary knowledge and skills.

Welcome again to Mercer; may you find support, learning and empowerment to carry out the ministry to which you are called, in joy! Mercer educates to better our minds and souls for better ministry.
