Four suggested books for Advent from the holdings of the Mercer Library

William Marshall, O Come Emmanuel: Scripture Verses for Advent Worship (Harrisburg, Pa.: Morehouse, 1993);

Anne McConney, Our December Hearts: Meditations for Advent and Christmas (Harrisburg, Pa.: Morehouse, 1999);

Watch for the Light: Readings for Advent and Christmas (Farmington, Pa.: Plough, 2001);

Francis X. Weiser, Handbook of Christian Feasts and Customs: The Year of the Lord in Liturgy and Folklore (New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, 1958).

Among the many books in the Mercer Library are four titles which can be recommended during this time. Weiser's handbook is particularly rich on traditions surrounding the season. Containing a selection for each day of the Advent and Christmas seasons from the last week in November though the first week in January, Watch for the light: Readings for Advent and Christmas is a British publication that includes thoughts of such figures as John Donne, Oscar Romero, Martin Luther, and Evelyn Underhill. William Marshall's O Come Emmanuel: Scripture Verses for Advent Worship and Anne McConney's Our December Hearts: Meditations for Advent and Christmas offer ways we can internalize the season for our good.
