The George Mercer Jr. School of Theology Library

The George Mercer Jr. Memorial School of Theology Library holds more than 32,000 books on Christian life, with an Anglican emphasis. Collections include pastoral counseling, psychology, education, and Anglican history. It is an Episcopal Resource Center.

As befitting a scholarly library, much of the library has been converted from the Dewey Decimal System to the Library of Congress System. Work is progressing to reorder the shelves, with a December 2008 target date. On the "New and Requested Books" table are flyers which detail how to locate materials in this transition period.

The library subscribes to many current serials. There is a small, but growing media collection, and an extensive collection of rare books; however, as yet few of these materials are in the online catalog.

In order to circulate books patrons must meet with the librarian, who will register them. Registration priority is given to clergy and laity in the Diocese of Long Island. The library does not charge overdue fees, but registered patrons are responsible for paying the full cost of replacement of items that are not returned.

During the school year I am generally in the library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 until 9 and Saturdays from 8:30 to 3. Call first to make sure I will be open before traveling to the library: 516-248-4800, ex. 39.

I am also available by appointment, either at that number or from my cell phone: 917-488-4515.
