About The George Mercer Jr. Memorial School of Theology

For over a half century, the Mercer School of Theology in the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island has been an important theological education resource for clergy and lay ministers in service to the church's mission. At the very heart of the school's life has been its program of education in preparation for the ordained ministry, both priesthood and diaconate. With the sweeping changes that came into the Church with the introduction of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, the Mercer School of Theology extended its offerings to support the renewed lay ministries required for spreading the Good News of the kingdom of God

During an academic year, the school offers seminars and study programs advertised on Mercer's website, that of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, and on Facebook. Inquirers are urged to place their names on the mailing list for updates on such programs either by writing to the school office, or by e-mailing us at merceroffice@dioceseli.org. You may also telephone the school office at 516-248-4800, ext. 140.

Courses and workshops are conducted both on-site at Mercer's Garden City campus and online. In addition, hybrid courses involving both online and on-site learning have been offered. Significant presentations have been recorded and made available both in video format and as podcasts. The use of online conversations fosters dialog on topics, themes, and issues arising in theological learning, preparation for ministry, Church life, and the relationship of all these to the world at large. Mercer School is intent on developing resources that respond to the issues of our time, putting our theological tradition into living dialogue with the needs, challenges, and prospects of the 21st century.

The vision of formal theological studies and ministry training within a community continues to grow at Mercer. As the needs for such learning and training increase and our offerings evolve in support of these needs, Mercer will respond by shaping educational programs designed to provide necessary knowledge and skills.
